Auckland War Memorial Museum, is situated on a high point near the CBD with stunning views over the Waitemata Harbour to Rangitoto Island. This amazing building, also known as the Auckland Museum, is an excellent old-style museum filled with a truly marvellous collection of artefacts. You can see whale bones, Polynesian artefacts, live shows by Maori dancers, New Zealand's flora and fauna, relics from ancient civilisations, historical looks at Auckland city from the days of the pioneers through to the 1960s and much more.
The museum is well worth a visit, especially if you have children. Don't miss the wacky, weird and wonderful Stevenson Discovery Centres - where children (and adults!) can amuse themselves with the interactive activities. Or be entertained by the Maori cultural show which operates several times a day and includes a welcome song, the poi dance, the stick game, a weaponry display and the famous haka. As well as permanent exhibits, the Museum has a variety of special exhibitions which change frequently.
